Jersey School Board asks for audit of all school buildings

The Jersey Community School Board Wednesday directed the central office staff to provide audits of all school buildings to school board members.

The board requests that the audits be done as soon as possible.

Jersey School Board president Greg Brown said that the board would like to see what each individual building has in the way of expenses, operating costs and revenues.

“We need to cut our deficit,” Brown said, “and the first thing is to find out what it is costing to run these buildings, if anything. We might find that the costs are not that bad, but until we see the figures we just don’t know.”

Brown said that there have been rumors that the district would be closing some outlying schools, but that is not true at this point.

“We need to make a valid decision of what  it is costing the district,” he said. “We also need to look at class size distribution and other items.”

“These audits would also give us an overall financial picture of the district.”

New figures were distributed for the Sixth Day Enrollment for all schools and it was noted that there are a total of 2,714 students in the district.

Delhi School has 110 students; Dow, 115; Fieldon, 96; Grafton, 143; East, 315 and West, 339.  Illini Middle School has 181 students in the sixth grade, 213  in the seventh grade and 227 in the eighth grade. At JCHS, there are 256 in the 9th grade; 222 in the 10th grade; 246 in the 11th grade and 251 in the 12th grade.

The board also approved the snow and ice removal for the district.  The low bid was awarded to Dean Long.

It was also announced that through the Jersey School District Foundation, $10,354.10 in Foundation to Schools Grant for the 2009-2010 school year.  The awards to the schools are based on enrollment and no school receives less than $500.
